Our Initiatives

We strive to make a positive impact in our community through various initiatives.

Project Alpha
Project Alpha™ is a collaborative initiative providing education and skill-building for young males ages 12-15 on responsibility, relationships, teen pregnancy, and sexually transmitted diseases. Through workshops and informational sessions led by Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity brothers, it equips young men with accurate information on teen pregnancy prevention. The project fosters awareness and personal development for youth.

It emphasizes the critical importance of completing secondary and collegiate education to achieve personal and professional growth. A Voteless People is a Hopeless People
“A Voteless People is a Hopeless People” (VPHP) began in the 1930s to address voter suppression faced by African-Americans due to poll taxes, threats, and lack of education about the voting process. For over 65 years, it has focused on voter education and registration. In the 1990s, the program expanded to include political awareness and empowerment through town meetings and candidate forums.

Ways to support the MZ Alumni Foundation

Giving Opportunities

Jewel Fund

The Jewel Fund, as the Foundation's general operating fund, provides essential financial resources for both administrative support and the Foundation’s educational, leadership, and service initiatives, including grants to Mu Zeta. It raises money to address Mu Zeta’s most pressing needs and ensure its sustainability. Alumni, parents, and friends are encouraged to contribute annually. The Foundation’s annual grant to Mu Zeta is made possible through donations to the Jewel Fund, which has no minimum contribution amount.

Giving Opportunities

1976 Society

The 1976 Society honors donors who demonstrate their commitment to Mu Zeta through generous annual or lifetime charitable giving. Membership levels include Alumni, Parents, and Friends who contribute $976.00 within a calendar year, and Undergraduates who contribute $19.76 per month for at least 12 months. This recognition encourages continued support for Mu Zeta's mission and growth.

Giving Opportunities

Stuart Scott Society

The Stuart Scott Society honors donors who have included the Foundation in their estate plans, leaving a lasting legacy for Mu Zeta. These contributions ensure continued support for the Chapter, for which Mu Zeta is deeply grateful. Alumni, parents, and friends are encouraged to consider estate planning gifts, which can take various forms. Additionally, some companies offer corporate matching programs, allowing employees to maximize their contributions. These matching gifts count toward annual and lifetime giving to the Foundation.

Join us in our Mission for a Better Community

Since its inception in 1976, The Mu Zeta Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. (“Mu Zeta”) has initiated dynamic student leaders that have shaped The University of North Carolina and enriched the Chapel Hill community.  Founded in 2016, MZ Alumni Foundation, a 501(c)(3) tax-exempt organization, was established to provide more structured financial support for the academic, programmatic, community, and cultural endeavors of Mu Zeta Chapter.  The Foundation’s board consists of seven members who will manage the Foundation’s operations and approve requests for grant funding from the undergraduate chapter for tax-exempt (charitable and educational) purposes under Internal Revenue Code § 501(c)(3).

How the Foundation Makes Grants

The Foundation’s board, composed of seven members, including two outside board members (one being a university representative), oversees operations and approves grant funding requests from the undergraduate chapter. Applications for funding are reviewed based on tax-exempt purposes under Internal Revenue Code § 501(c)(3). Each grant proposal is evaluated individually, with no minimum distribution amount required. The Foundation does not fund initiation fees or membership dues but may provide scholarships and engage in community service projects independently of Mu Zeta grants.
